A Message From Pastor Ed Black

November 2008

Dear Friend,

The weeks of economic woes and alarming financial news are enough to make many people nervous and some downright glum.

I am writing this about three and a half weeks before the election, and regardless of who wins, I know that some people in our congregation will be distraught and disheartened by the outcome.

With this stuff taking place, we enter the month traditionally set to focus on giving thanks.  The media gurus have been predicting that there will be less spending in the weeks leading up to Christmas and there is considerable concern over that trend.  Is anyone concerned that there might be less thanksgiving and worship to God in the weeks leading up to the holidays set aside to thank God and celebrate with praise the gift of a Savior?  From the Holy Scriptures, we learn that our main purpose in this life is to glorify God and enjoy him forever (1 Corinthians 10:31, Romans 11:36, Psalm 73:24-26, and John 17:22,24).  So for faithful followers of Jesus Christ, there can be no letting up on our praise and thanksgiving.  We should lead the way in being thankful, positive people.  We know that God is still on the throne of heaven and God is still the One we can rely upon to supply all our needs.

An unknown poet penned these words:

“Happy moments, praise God
Difficult moments, seek God
Quiet moments, worship God
Painful moments, trust God
Every moment, thank God”

In those times when we are feeling a bit down, it may be more work to focus on those things that are good and positive gifts of God - but the work is worth it.  When we look for the good gifts and make each blessing a springboard for praising and thanking God, it begins to change us from the inside out.
Let’s do all in our power to make this a season of strong thanksgiving for our family and our faith family.

In Christ’s amazing grace,
Pastor Ed Black
